The interviewee is a girl, who is a PhD student from India.
As you know, Indian culture has many different points from American culture.
Through this interview, she showed that it was relatively unlikely that Indian people talk to a stranger.

a. She was looking for a building on th campus, so she asked someone where it was. She struck up by the word “Excuse me.”

b. She usually doesn’t shake hands with people, since it is the convention of India.

c. She usually doesn’t use “How do you do?” and uses “Hi, How are you?”. In some more formal situations, she uses “How are you doing?”.

d. If an introduced man is standing, than she might stand up.

e. She usually doesn’t talk with people whom she doesn’t know. If she need to ask someone about anything, she might talk with them.

f. She use the words ”Hi, how are you?”

g. If she needs to talk to them, she will do. ex.) to get some information at a station or etc.

h. She asked where a building of her interest was on the campus.

I asked officers in Walmart where a thing of my interst was.
I guess that these are almost the only opportunity to talk with strangers.
In Japan, it is also unusual to talk with people whom we don’t know.
